Dutch researchers claimed that newborns with low levels of Vitamin D are at greater risk of lung infections with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

RSV is the main cause of severe infections in the babies’ lungs and during the first year of life, it is the most known cause of pneumonia and bronchitis in the United States. Low levels of Vitamin D have been suspected to play role in the exposure to RSV.

This led Dr. Mirjam E. Belderbos of the Utrecht University Medical Center in Netherlands, and co-workers to calculate the levels of Vitamin D in the cord blood of 156 newborn babies and then to follow the toddlers for one year.

In addition, at birth, over 25 percent of the newborn babies had low levels of Vitamin D, levels of serum was less than 20 ng/mL. During their first year of life, these toddlers had six times greater risk of RSV lung infection than did of the 46 percent of children whose levels of Vitamin D at birth were at least 30 ng/mL.

Dr.Belderbos and co-workers reported that they confirmed that 54 percent of healthy newborn babies in Netherlands are born with inadequate concentrations of Vitamin D needed for utmost health, and that low plasma concentrations of Vitamin D are linked with greater risk of RSV infections in the preliminary year of life.

The researchers added that it is not simply Netherlands because other Western countries, including the United States, have the same rates when it comes to low levels of Vitamin D. in 2010, researchers from the U.S. reported that at a single hospital in Boston, 58 percent of babies and 36 percent of mothers had low levels of Vitamin D. Serious deficiency in Vitamin D was also observed in 38 percent of the babies and in 23 percent of the mothers.

A new research showed that consuming pain killers like Ibuprofen can kill patients who have suffered cardiovascular attack.

Scientist looked at people who formerly had a cardiovascular attack and begun taking the prescription medicines. They discovered that the use of the tablets, commonly known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), was linked with 45 percent increased risk of casualty or repeated heart attack in as little as one week of medication.

Moreover, there was a 55 percent increased risk if the medication with the tablets were extended to three months. NSAIDs are commonly employed and are connected with increased risk of heart attack in patient with heart illness or those at greater risk.

The American Heart Association advised doctors in its statement last 2007 with regard to the risks of using NSAIDs among patients with cardiovascular disease or suffered from heart attack and provided a stepped care approach. In addition, the statement also suggested extra care for when NSAIDs may be employed, noting that they must be restricted to patients for whom there are not right options, and then, only in the lowest dosage and for the shortest period needed.

In the recent study, investigators studied that if the period of prescription NSAIDs medication influenced the heart risk among cardiovascular patients. Among 83,697 survivors of cardiovascular attack, 42.3 percent had at least one prescription for NSAIDs.

The most known NSAIDs prescribed by doctors were Ibuprofen and Diclofenac with 23 percent and 13.4 percent respectively. Selective COX-2 inhibitors b rofecoxib and celecoxib were also used as pain killers with 4.7 percent and 4.8 percent respectively. On the other hand, non-selective NSAIDs diclofenac was linked with early start risk that is same to the selective COX-2 inhibitor rofecoxib.

According to researchers from University of Pennsylvania, the rates of heart bypass surgery declined by 33.33 percent in the United States between 2001 and 2008.

The study was reported in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Still, the amount of swell angioplasties supplements of stents used to bring in narrow blood vessels stayed somewhat the same. These procedures are commonly known as percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).

Moreover, researchers wrote that the revascularization of coronary, including PCI and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, is among the most known chief medical procedures given by the health care system of the U.S., with over one million procedures done yearly.

The researchers also explained that latest strategies for revascularization of coronary, comprising drug-eluting stents (DES) and plainly CABG surgery have become more and more common over the last decade. They tend to have better results compared with the old strategies and technologies.

In addition, the authors also said that during this time of technological improvement, latest published proof, and updated regulations, it is not recognized whether or how the amount of revascularization of coronary and its basic kinds altered in the U.S. Extensive changes in general amount of revascularization of coronary or the comparative use of PCI versus CABG surgery will have essential implications on clinical results, costs of healthcare, and the future association and shipment hospital-based heart care.

Dr. Andrew Epstein and colleagues approximated the patterns in the annually totals for the procedures of revascularization of coronary by collecting information from a representative nationwide sample of hospitalization claims. They also collected information on people who underwent CABG surgery or PCI between 2001 and 2008 in hospitals in the U.S. in the Healthcare Cost and &Utilization Project’s Nationwide Inpatient Sample. They also added the data from outpatient hospital claims in Medicare.

The Kennedy Space Center said that May 10 will be the possible liftoff of space shuttle Endeavor for its last voyage on space.

This is the earliest date that the team of Kennedy Space Center can finish working the maintenance of an electrical problem that cancelled the takeoff attempt last Friday. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hoped a second try may be likely as soon as Sunday, but resolute it will take almost two more days than initially thought to prepare the Endeavor for another countdown.

According to Allard Beutel, the spokesperson of Kennedy Space Center, it became obvious on Monday that extended time was needed to finish the repairs. The cancellation of liftoff on Friday was because the heaters on a fuel line feeding portion of the hydraulic power system of the space shuttle failed to start, a problem that can have led to a fire during its flight.

In addition, an electronic switch box in the engine compartment of the orbiter is thought to be at responsibility. The box paths power to nine important systems, from the units of auxiliary power affected last week to the orbital thrusters and chief engines.

On Monday, the crews of Kennedy Space Center executed tests on the approximately 50 pounds box and connected parts. They anticipated eliminating it by this morning and a substitute setup later today. Widespread systems checks will follow, needing scaffolding and access platforms to be constructed inside to the aft compartment of the space shuttle.

Before a countdown for takeoff can start, those platforms must be broken down and a quantity of other preparations finished, which include reloading of fuel cell system of orbiters with propellants. Beutel also said that maybe in few more days, after they have gotten the box detached, put a new one in and begun retesting, they will have a good idea whether May 10 is a possible date as well.

A recent study showed that lack of Vitamin D is common in children in the United States and associated with obesity and various kinds of fat distribution in black and white children.

Vitamin D is found in some foods, but a person produce most of the nutrient they need thru the action of sunlight on exposed skin. Furthermore, food supplements can also increase Vitamin D levels.

In the research, investigators tested the levels of Vitamin D in 237 healthy non-obese and obese black and white children that range at the age of eight to 18 years old. They found out that most of the participants were lacking from Vitamin D. Low levels of this kind of vitamin were linked with greater body mass index (BMI) and levels of fat, and low levels of good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

In addition, the researchers also discovered that among participants with Vitamin D shortage, white youngster were more possible to have greater levels of fat between their internal organs, while black youngster were more possible to have greater levels of fat under their skin.

This study is issued in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism on May. Dr. Silva Arslania, the lead author from the University of Pittsburgh, stated that Vitamin D shortage is widespread in the children in the U.S., and there is some recommendation in adults that lower levels of this vitamin may be playing an important role in the rising rates of Type II Diabetes.

Dr. Arslanian also said in a news release from the Endocrine Society that it is more likely that the same situation may be true for youngster with Type II Diabetes. He added that besides the interferences in therapeutic to correct the high rates of Vitamin D shortage in childhood, advantages of vitamin D optimization on the levels of fat, blood fat profile and the danger of Type II Diabetes need to be discovered.

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) reduced its prediction for the economic growth of the country in the rouse of the natural calamities that slumped Japan in March.

The Japanese central bank also said that the cut back left its main interest rate at ultralow levels in a proposal to support a recovery. The BoJ now anticipates the third-biggest economy in the world next to the United States and China to increase 0.6 percent in the recent business year, which ends in March 31 next year. That is down from a 1.6 percent rate of economic growth that the bank had predicted last January.

In addition, BoJ stated in a report that as an outcome of the calamities, the economy of the country will certainly continue to face robust downward strain for the period being. The move to run off the key interest rate at almost zero to 0.1 percent had been broadly anticipated, and the decision was common among the nine members of the policy board of the central bank who voted.

The BoJ did not released any new stimulus measures, as some analysts had anticipated, even if one member of the board did suggest expanding a present asset acquisition program. The scheme was cast off in an 8-to-1 votes. The quake and tsunami that happened last March 11 an the following commotion to supply chains and power systems has caused business confidence, customer spending and production to fall.

The data published by the Trade Ministry on Thursday showed that the industrial production last month dropped by a record of 15.3 percent from the previous month. Furthermore, the consequences from the quake have delayed the recovery of Japan from the deep slump that chased the financial crisis worldwide, prompting several organizations to predict markedly sluggish growth for this year.

The ministry of economy, trade and industry reported that sales on retail stores in Japan in March dropped 8.5 percent from a previous year.

The retail stores reported their deepest decline in 13 years in the business last month as the destructive quake and tsunami weakened customer response. The ministry also said that it was the second worst on record since the administration begun collecting the information in 1980.

According to some economists, the dual catastrophe on March 11 wrecked stores and houses along the northeastern coast of the country and caused the customers across the country to cutback spending on nonessential products.

On the other hand, the official data also reported that the sales in car fell 32.8 percent last month from a previous year, with the sales in machinery drop 17.3 percent. Sales of textiles and clothes dropped ten percent but the sales in fuel increased 5.1 percent. Takeshi Minami, Norinchukin Research Institute’s economist said that voluntary control among customers played an important role.

He also said that moves among traders to shut down stores or shorten their business hours to preserve electricity will possibly affect the sales. Minami added that the sales in retail store will stay weak for the April to September preliminary half of the recent fiscal year. He also added that the customer response was slowly recovering.

The tsunami damaged a huge part of the nuclear power plant, causing fears of a deficiency in electricity supply as the summer approaches. However, Minami stated that this condition will not last forever. Sales of durable products like vehicles will begin picking up when Japan enters complete healing from the calamity. The retail data came a day after the Department Stores Association in Japan reported sales last month dropped 14.7 percent, also the greatest decline in 13 years.

Ukraine commemorated the 25th year anniversary of the fatal outburst in Chernobyl nuclear plant in the previous Soviet state that led to the worst nuclear catastrophe in the history.

The tribute started in the middle of the night in Kiyv, Ukraine when Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill hit a bell at the exact time of the outburst at Chernobyl on April 26, 1986. Individuals light candles and lay flowers to tribute the memory of the victims who passed away because of the disaster.

Viktor Yanukovych, the president of Ukraine, and Patriarch Kirill also remembered the victims with candle-lighting ceremony and prayers, while Dmitry Medvedev, the president of Russia, will join them later at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl.

In addition, the Chernobyl outburst was 400 times more powerful compared with the atom bomb that fell on Hiroshima in 1945. It sent a cloud of radioactive come to blows into Russia and over a huge part of Europe. The first outburst killed two persons.

On the other hand, the exposure in radiation killed 30 more individuals in the following months after the explosion. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that nearly 4,000 individuals sooner or later can die because of the incident.

The catastrophe fueled a continuing argument with regard to the safety of nuclear energy as a source of power, an argument that has gotten burning since last month’s quake and tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The 1986 catastrophe has lest 30 kilometers area around the vicinity of Chernobyl nuclear power plant mostly tumbledown, while according to environmentalists, fields in the enclosing area and the products grown in there are still not safe and can cause a danger to the human health.

Officials stated that Endeavor, a shuttle that will use to bring a latest set of physics instrument to NASA’s International Space Station, was prepared to blast off on April 29.

The takeoff of the 134th shuttle mission is slated for 3:47 p.m. EDT from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. All of the expert crew was led by Mark Kelly, husband of Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, who is recovering from a shooting in January 8 that injured 12 persons and killed six individuals.

The main reason of the liftoff is to bring the $2 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectormeter, or AMS, particle detector, a device intended to distinguish dark antimatter, matter and other unusual phenomena. Bill Gerstenmaier from NASA said that the device has the potential of coming back to Earth-shattering science.

A group of 600 scientists from 16 countries, including Taiwan and China, are colleagues in the project. After setting up AMS, the astronauts of the shuttle Endeavor will turn their concentration to four spacewalks and other jobs to aid get the International Space Station of NASA ready for procedures without shuttle support.

The space station is a $100 billion venture of the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe and Russia that has been under structure since 1998. This station is 220 miles or 350 kilometers above the Earth. After one last shuttle takeoff in June to bring worth of supplies for a year, the space station will depend on smaller load ships from Japan, Europe and Russia.

Endeavor, which will be making its last and 25th mission, is projected to keep in orbit up to 16 days. On the other, Discovery, the sister shuttle of Endeavor, finished its final mission last March 9, while the shuttle Atlantis is targeted to takeoff on June 28 to finish the three decades shuttle program.
