Facebook, the popular social networking site, added a voluntary authentication step to its login process to help millions of its users to prevent illicit access to their personal accounts.

Login Approvals, the latest feature for login security, is a form of two-factor verification that adds a step to the fundamental verification of username and password. With Login Approvals, users of Facebook can now choose to have the company require that a one-time numeric code be entered along with their username and password when an attempt to login is made from gadgets that Facebook users have not saved as granted ones.

In addition, the company posted in a blog on Thursday that Facebook will send the numeric code as an SMS message to the mobile phone that its user has connected to the account. In this way, an account will be secured against illicit access by someone who stole the username and password of a user.  The next time that he attempts to login, the valid user will be notified that someone is trying to access their account and will be requested to change the compromised password.

Moreover, if the user has activated Login Approvals, attempts to access the account from a not recognized gadget and does not have the authorized mobile phone at hand, he will stay locked out until he logs in from an approved gadget. The company may consider including other technology to Login Approvals further than SMS, but it is keeping off on it until those other forms of two-factor authentication become much simpler.

Andrew Song, an engineering intern of Facebook, wrote in a blog that one challenge in creating Login Approvals was to balance usability and security of their users. Same aspects to other sites need to download authentication applications or buy physical tokens to act as their second aspect. These are better approaches, and they were considering including them in the near future.

Reports said Thursday that a Christian group is predicting May 21 as the world’s Judgment day, telling people to cry mightily to God.
