Qantas Airways Reputation Loses its Shine

After one of Qantas A380s plane made an emergency landing in Singapore due to engine failure last week, the Airbus’ reputation is losing its luster.

The Australian airline decided to extend the grounding of its six Airbus SAS A380 fleet, in order to conduct further inspection in response for the engine blowout last week that forced an emergency return to Singapore airport.

Ronald Bishop, senior lecturer in aviation at Central Queensland University in Australia and a US Air Force engineer for twenty years, said that there is a halo around Qantas that attracts best pilots and have a great record. Once there’d be a third incident, whether it’s a fluke, people will stop flying with them.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said that they have cancelled their flights and leased aircrafts from British Airways to replace the slot which A380s have withdrawn that account for about 17 percent of international capacity.

Qantas shares decreased by 2.1 percent to A$2.80 at the 4:10 p.m. close of trading in Sydney.

On Australian Broadcasting on Sunday, Joyce said that they have decided to remove the Rolls-Royce engines from the aircrafts because of the anomalies that was found on the engines. He said that one of the irregularities that inspectors found on the plane is that oil is placed where it should not be.

Moreover, Joyce said that everything is under control and under evaluation. They are just waiting for the right time when to announce that A380s fleet can safely fly again. But they are looking forward to go back to operation.

On the other hand, Qantas A380 is not just the largest passenger plane but also holds the reputation which never had a fatal jetliner accident. It was featured in the Oscar-winning movie “Rain Man” when Dustin Hoffman, one of the main characters refused to fly with any other carrier. However, The Herald Sun, Australia’s bestselling newspaper, dubbed Qantas as the “falling kangaroo” in a headline following the engine failure incident.

  1. As far as I know, there has been no fatal crash reported in the entire history of Qantas, is that right? That is why; they come up on this move to take good care on the reputation they’ve put up for a long time.
